“It has been said that capitalism is the worst form of economics, except all the others that have been tried.”

In my travels though the internet, you see a lot of noise about the recession, the economy, and how it’s looking all doom-and-gloom. And there’s a lot of reasons why there should be some worried faces out there. Companies are going belly up, countries in places that are normally a bastion of financial security are going under in a sea of red ink, or getting quite close. Heck even the United States, who on the economic scale would probably be the furthest into the capitalistic camp, had it’s credit rating lowered recently due to their decades of financial mismanagement and recent political instability/incompetence (although their president Barack Obama would like you to believe that credit ratings apply to everyone except themselves). So naturally folks aren’t too pleased with the folks on Wall St, Bay St, and Paternoster Square to name a few economic hubs. They want answers, and they want solutions, and after three years of a recession that doesnt’ seem to be going away, folks are getting antsy for solutions… Continue reading

Bringing over my more “sporting” literary works

For the last year I’ve been writing for a sports site that I owned named The Sports Blog Network. While it sadly ended up like most sites on the internet and folded due to lack of interest of the populace, it was a good time. Made some new friends, helped some old ones get their portfolio of writing filled out, and overall was a worthwile endevour that maybe one day I’ll look into starting again. Continue reading

HD Video and WordPress themes; oil and water

After returning from two weeks of rest, relaxation, and total detox from technology (outside of the occasional smartphone email check…darn contract applications), I decided that the blog needed a bit of a revamp. The look was getting tired, and took forever to load, so decided to just grab something simple yet clean and go from there. Seems simple right? Continue reading

Could being unfocused be a positive trait?

On the rare occasions that we get a nice, sunny weather here in the winter, I like to go out and see the lay of the land. I find it’s a great way to see the different scenery and undiscovered part of the area that you live in, plus it’s quite relaxing to boot. However, one of the things that I have found in my travels is that the radio station selection is absolutely terrible, and only goes downhill the further you get from Charlottetown, which is why I usually drive with the radio off and the windows down. Today thought, it was a bit too bloody cold to have the windows down, and eventually I found myself channel surfing as I was driving through the Evangeline in the vain attempt that I’d find something that would be of interest. Baseball and history happen, even in Canada

One of the things that I do for hobbies is to play a game called Out of the Park baseball. It’s a baseball text simulator, which for those that weren’t around when MUD’s were a big thing, means that it’s completely text based game. No fancy graphics rendering or any other eye candy to be had, heck you could probably play this on the computer that your father uses in the basement that weights more then your dog and looks like it could withstand a nuclear blast. One of the big things about this game is the online communities that spring up, where folks that have the game participate in online leagues, controlling teams that all play for the championship every year, just like the real thing. The Game of Thrones, or why I miss HBO

I was never a big fan of the whole fantasy based literature that was out there. From the bit that I was exposed too, it always struck me as being very fake and vapid, almost to the point of being compared to cheesy romance novels in its writing abilities. Add the whole “those kind of books will make you a devil worshipper!” BS that the area I resided in seem to subscribe too, and you can see why quality literature in this genre would be hard to come by. In fact until my teens the closest that I would come to reading something in that genre would have been Ken Follett’s Pillars of the Earth, which in my opinion is the best novel of his works that I’ve read so far, but it’s not really a fantasy novel per say. If a classification were to be made, I’d put it more as historical fiction, as the main characters are purely fictional, but the world that they exist in was very real. Continue reading
