While digging through the interwebs for historical PEI photos recently, I cam across this video that looks to be tourism footage from the 1950′s. Or at least the cars and the really oil painting colour scheme lead towards that assumption. Neat to see footage of when there was actually a railroad active, there’s no RV’s in sight, and the shoreline isn’t dotted from Malpeque to Savage Harbour with 300k cottages. In short, my kind of place.
Every once in a while, I seem to get an itch for some tunes that hail from the Great White North. Bands that you’d rarely, if ever, hear on US airwaves (to say nothing on Top 40 radio), but that you’d used to hear on Canadian airwaves when we used to have more then six “Hot” tunes and country to choose from when spinning the dail in the car. I was never a big fan of the whole fantasy based literature that was out there. From the bit that I was exposed too, it always struck me as being very fake and vapid, almost to the point of being compared to cheesy romance novels in its writing abilities. Add the whole “those kind of books will make you a devil worshipper!” BS that the area I resided in seem to subscribe too, and you can see why quality literature in this genre would be hard to come by. In fact until my teens the closest that I would come to reading something in that genre would have been Ken Follett’s Pillars of the Earth, which in my opinion is the best novel of his works that I’ve read so far, but it’s not really a fantasy novel per say. If a classification were to be made, I’d put it more as historical fiction, as the main characters are purely fictional, but the world that they exist in was very real. (more…)
